Add different page numbers or number formats to different sections – Microsoft Support – Question Info

I’m trying to quickly finish formatting a master’s thesis for a friend but the paper was based on a really bad template provided by the school. Unfortunately, that has brought several problems and I think this is one of them but I can’t figure out a manual work-around to this one. I need Roman numerals in the top right of the header for the first 10 or so pages and then I need to insert a non-Roman numeral numbering system to begin anew at the start of „chapter one”.
When I insert it on the right, it shows up as that strange vertical rectangle character, and when on the left, most of the numbers don’t show up at all or there is only one Roman and some with no numbers or all are „regular” numbers.

Sorry this didn’t help. I join Stefan’s recommendation of that page. When changing section settings on a document of this importance, make regular backups and keep at least three of them in different locations.

Charles Kenyon Volunteer Moderator. Page numbers in Word are fields that are in headers or footers. Headers and footers are parts of Sections. There can be multiple sections on a page.
Each section can have three headers and three footers. If some pages have page numbers and others do not, it is probably because you are using a different first-page setting or different even and odd. Each header or footer in a section after the first section can be linked to the same type of header or footer in the previous section. You can go into the header or footer and directly add page numbers by adding a page field. This is usually more satisfactory than one of the ones from the gallery.
